A radio show to reflect on.
Do you know where exactly the food you consume regularly comes from? Do you know how it was produced; what the working conditions along the production chains looked like?
Industrialised agriculture, a few megacorporations dominating the food market: the globalization of food is spreading – at the expense of man and the environment. Even though we are overflowing and we buy so much food that even 1/3 of it ends up in the garbage dump, according to the UN 795 million people are starving. Small-scale structured agriculture can hardly survive and small farmers are losing more and more rights.
The protest movement “Ernährungssouveränität” (food sovereignty) has developed out of these problems as an alternative to the current food system. Making good, healthy and locally adapted food accessible to all people is the vision of the movement for food sovereignty. Brigitte Reisenberger of FIAN tells us how big the movement in Austria is and what each and every one of us can do.
In the second part of the show, you can listen to an interview with Samuel, who is a member of the “S’peis” – a food coop in Vienna.
A food coop (food cooperative) is the association of people and households that buy biological products directly from local farms, nurseries, apiaries, etc. in a self-organized way.
Samuel tells us how food coops work. He explains why he is there and how to start a food coop.
